a scary moment with my kid
By Ron Kule of Sales Training Services, Inc.
My scariest moment was with my own kid who was about 4 years old at the time; it was years ago. I took my boy on a flying ride at Disneyland, the Flying Dumbos. I was strapped in, and he was on my lap held only by me. As we flew round and round all was going okay until my son got scared and wanted off the ride...RIGHT NOW! He squirmed to get out, and I held him tighter - which if you have children of your own, you know is not exactly the best thing to do to calm a screaming child with a mind of its own! There was a metal bar that I could hold onto in front of me. I braced myself on this bar, not knowing that pulling it would make the Flying Dumbo we were in begin to gyrate up and down in addition to the round and round we were going, making an already upset child even more frightened. He wasn't the only one on the ride who was scared - I was panicked about him falling out! And it never dawned on me that I was exacerbating the situation the more I pulled on the bar. I hit a moment when the pit of my stomach told me I "knew" I was going to lose my son overboard; I was sure we were in so much trouble, and he would die falling from the ride. Knowing and feeling that was the most horrible moment of my life; it gave me a glimpse into what it must feel like for a parent to lose a child in death. The very moment I could no longer hold my son and keep my balance at the same time as we flew up and down in a dangerous circle the ride mercifully was slowed down and drew to a stop. My son was crying, and I, breathing heavily, was exhausted, yet relieved that my ex-wife, with whom I shared visitation rights, would never receive a fateful phone call from me about our son. To this day, she doesn't know what almost happened...and I pray she never will! But now, my reader, you do. The lesson I learned that day was to never to take a kid on a ride in which he cannot properly be strapped in or protected, because the worst could happen any time. (By the way, my son is today a fine young man with a son of his own...which reminds me, I better send him to this Intel!)

Let's pray that your ex doesn't become a blogger. I guess I'm kinda surprised that Disney let you ride that way...

It was about 30 years ago. My guess is that things are different now.
I think that many parents take their children on rides, that may not be completely safe. However, as adults we think that everything will be OK, because we're right there with them. We're still kids at heart and want them to experience the thrill. Thanks for sharing, Ron. Best wishes. Frederick

That was my thought at that time. Here I thought my son would enjoy the ride, but it turned out badly for both of us...except we both survived!
