alarm security system event

By Ron Kule

We have an alarm system for the whole house, and it works well. One time it worked too well.

We were new first-time homeowners and had a new alarm system and codes, so we felt safe in leaving our cat at home while we went out of town for a weekend vacation. After all, what could go wrong...right?

To be sure, my wife had asked a cat sitter to come over and check on our cat at feeding time and had given her a code to enter the house so the alarm wouldn't sound at the appointed time.

All hell broke loose when the teenaged sitter entered the house and forgot her code! The alarm was deafening...for 20 minutes!

The police arrived within a few short minutes but they couldn't turn off the siren and were too busy grilling our sitter for her ID and what she was doing at our home anyhow. We were long out of town by then and driving across the state toward our hotel, not suspecting anything awry, because our sitter did not (it turned out) have a cell phone! And our backup friends never took the call from our alarm company as they were also away from home!

Our cat was nowhere to be found. He had hidden himself well under some clothes in our closet, probably trying to find a way not to have to hear the alarm siren anymore. (We do know he was never the same after that when it came to loud repetitive sounds or abrupt noises.)

We only found out about the alarm situation upon arriving at our hotel. A quick call to our alarm company verified our identities...and the alarm fell silent. The police, notified all was okay with our teenaged sitter left satisfied, but we never were able to get that sitter to help us watch our cat again.

As I wrote earlier, the alarm works well, but even I get antsy every time we set it. I just can't imagine listening to such a sound for 20 whole minutes...it gives me the shuddering creeps just to recall it in my memory even as I write this Intel!

That happened to me, too when I was out of town but it was because the battery ran out and the security system kept malfunctioning. I change batteries on all my alarm eyes every New Year's Day now.

Nora, sorry you had to experience that, too. The idea of regularly changing the batteries is definitely one to heed!

Man, I feel for the traumatized cat! But on the bright side, at least the event was proof that the setup works as it should, i.e. the cops do show up and they do the right thing. You must live in a good neighborhood. Some places I been to, a wailing alarm just brings in more looters.

Nick, Whoa! Tough neighborhood!
