book review

By Ron Kule

"Battlefield Earth" by L. Ron Hubbard was one of my favorite reads in the sci-fi genre. Although I do not generally read sci-fi, the author's strength in revealing both the exterior and interior (mental outlook) of his characters is without peer. When many other similar novels rely on mechanistic visions of the future, Hubbard's view is always upon the humanity and its conquest of the environment and its perserverance toward goals.
Nothwithstanding the bad rendition of this story in the movie version, which I heard was crucified in the editing room by others with other fish to fry, this is an epic tale of what might become a reality in North America should the chaos of war finally overtake this continent.
Hubbard is without doubt one of the most prolific writers of any century, with many books still in print and still selling briskly although he has not been with us since the 1980's. If one could say there is a common thread to his stories it could be that very struggle that takes place inside each one of us mortals: the overcoming of not unknown barriers toward known and desired goals, including the conquest of our own minds in the task.
Battlefield Earth's protagonist main character, Johnny Goodboy Tyler, is "everyman;" we live as he lives, love as he loves, and win or lose in the trying.
For an insightful journey into the Mind of Man as well as simply a great ride along a terrific path filled with demonic aliens, strange characters and a love interest, I recommend, "Battlefield Earth" by L. Ron Hubbard.
