easier public speaking
By Ron Kule
You can be a better public speaker and enjoy speaking to audiences more if you follow a few tips learned from my experiences with large and small audiences in 17 countries. First, realize that an audience participates as listeners; they elect you to be the speaker when you are announced or introduced, and they expect to listen. This tacit agreement makes speaking to audiences easier when you realize this simplicity: they expect you to speak to them. Second, an audience is a group, yet groups are made up of individuals. When you speak to an "audience" you are in actual fact, speaking to individuals. In other words, if you speak soley to "audiences," they will not enjoy your speech, because they will feel you are not speaking to any ONE of them; however, speak to individuals within that group one at a time and each audience member will believe you are speaking to them individually. This is because they can observe you are speaking to other individuals. Third, say what you say with confidence. Do not worry about what you have not said, or what you have forgotten to say; they will not miss what you did not say. If you speak with confidence, whatever you say, you will convey that confidence to each audience member, and they will feel confident along with you. Fourth, learn your subject well and more extensively than your planned speech. Knowing more than you need to about your subject instills more confidence and certainty into you, and you will, therefore, become more at ease at the podium. Public speaking is communicating. Communicating requires both a giver and a receiver of the communication. It requires a subject matter to be conveyed, for ideas are part and parcel of any communication. The idea must reach across the distance and it must be understood by each receiver. When your ideas are clearly and confidently conveyed to the individuals who wish to hear them from you, you will find that public speaking is not only easy but a joy to do. There is a power to be savored by those who do speak well in public; shaking emotions and shifting thoughts provoked by your words becomes palpable. Ideas are the vessels that move mountains and change Man. If you are in sales as a career, public speaking practice will make you a better salesperson. It makes a presentation to one individual in front of you so much easier when you know you have enlightened whole audiences of individuals at one time! I recommend public speaking to any salesperson, for both fun and profit.

Toastmasters is an excellent organization to help new public speakers gain confidence and learn delivery styles. Highly recommended for sales people too
Great article Ron. I'm enjoying reading some of your articles this afternoon. I was terrified of public speaking and did forget most of my speech but I just kept going. They didn't know, it worked out fine. Then I joined Toastmasters and got so much encouragement from the members. I found that reading my speech out loud in front of a mirror, really helped. I also recorded it and played it back. Kept recording until I was happy. It worked for me. Looking forward to reading some new articles now that you are retired?
