my favorite job
By Ron Kule of Sales Training Services, Inc.
Back in the 1970's I sold steaks in boxes to people in business offices. It was fun, because so many people loved the meat and re-ordered many time from me. I was young and full of energy and often ran in between office buildings, sometimes with 50-60 pounds of steak boxes, just to get all my sales done quickly. I sold New Yorks, Top Sirloins, Porterhouses, Filet Mignons, and lean hamburger patties by the box. The steaks were restaurant cut which are different than meats found in the supermarkets. The difference is that restaurants also want steaks that look good on the plate, so they are cut evenly across; supermarkets cut steaks thin on one side and thicker on the other - like a wedge. Wedge cut steaks are thicker on the fatty side, so you end up paying more for fat and less for real edible meat. Our steaks were usually 1-2 inches thick and a better bargain than supermarket steaks...and they tasted better since they were usually of a higher grade, too. That job taught me a lot about beef and how it is handled and prepared for different uses. It also showed me eventually that hormones were added to the animals while alive to fatten them up; hormones not necessarily meant for human consumption. While I did not become a vegetarian after learning that, I did cut my consumption of a lot of steaks from my diet. Still, the job was fun, and I was good at it. I associated then with a bunch of good guys and gals who sold on the same team with me. Monday morning sales meetings were always the best times, because we got steak and eggs free, told stories of our sales adventures the past week and sometimes won awards like free leather jackets and cash! Eventually I ran a "satellite office" for that company and developed my own sales staffs. Met some women there I'll never forget, too! The only reason I left that job was it became challengeless for me. All my sales were pre-orders that I only had to deliver, and there was nothing more for me to gain, so I moved on to other sales jobs. But I will give a shout-out to Brian who turned me on to the game of selling steaks and to Richard who was my best buddy and partner up in the High Desert areas where we sold steaks as fast as we could to see who would sell more boxes each day.
